State Advisory Council / Family Engagement Center

Message from:

Barbara Boone, PhD,

Director, Statewide Family Engagement Center

Program Director for Family Engagement Programs

Center on Education and Training for Employment

College of Education and Human Ecology

We are actively recruiting parents and other caregivers to join our State Advisory Council for our fourth year as a center and I would like you to share the application with PTAs in Ohio.  Please encourage them to apply and to share the application with other families they know.  This council provides our center with critical guidance from the perspectives of families, schools, business,es and other organizations.  We are seeking parents and caregivers of children and youth, preschool through high school.  The deadline is November 19, 2021.

What are expectations for a member?

  • Family representatives are asked to serve one to two years if possible.
  • A typical Advisory Council meeting provides members with information about family engagement, helps members connect with each other and resources in Ohio, asks members to provide guidance for the development of a tool, policy, or other resource, and requests assistance from members in building awareness of the importance of family engagement in their community.
  • The Advisory Council meets four times a year, virtually, for about three hours (Must have access to technology to attend meetings).
  • Each parent/caregiver will receive a stipend for their attendance for each meeting.
  • Upon request, professional language interpretation can be provided so families who speak languages other than English may participate.

We are planning to have our application translated into other languages, and can fast-track that process if you let us know about a particular language needed.

Applications are limited to parents and caregivers who are not professional educators or administrators. In addition, children of parents and caregivers should be enrolled in the public school system.

Deadline for applications is November 19, 2021

We are grateful for your assistance in sharing this invitation with your network of families.

Racial Equity Workshops for Parents & Caregivers

Did you know?
Children can recognize race-based differences as early as 6 months old and can internalize racial bias by ages 2-4.
Talking about racial equity with kids can be difficult, but it’s essential. And we’re here to help!

Join us!
The Children’s Museum of Cleveland and Dr. Heather Hill of Parenting for Equity & Social Justice are hosting Racial Equity Workshops for Parents this Fall. These workshops will provide a safe and judgement-free environment where parents and caregivers can learn from an expert, ask questions, engage in dialogue, and even practice some new skills.

Who is this workshop designed for?
Our racial equity programs are designed to support families of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds on their educational journey. This workshop expands on the information covered in our Let's Talk toolkit.

If you are new to CMC's racial equity resources, or have engaged with the Let's Talk toolkit but want to engage more, this workshop is for you! If you have participated in our Parent & Caregiver Learning Community meetings with CSU, you may have covered this information already.
Details:
We will be hosting the workshop on two dates this fall. It will be the same workshop on each date, so you only need to register for one! Face masks covering the nose and mouth are required for all guests ages 3 and up.

Sunday, October 10th

PTA Takes Action - Gun Control

When this school year began, many families focused on readjusting to a new normal. Ensuring that our students and teachers were healthy and ready for the school year ahead. We all were optimistic and up for the challenge! Instead, our students are currently facing weekly threats due to gun violence and active school shootings.

National PTA recognizes the recent school shootings and events due to gun violence. No parent should have to fear for the safety of their child once they leave home. Unfortunately, lives are continuously being lost or changed forever due to a lack of gun violence prevention laws. PTA calls on Congress and the Administration to immediately address the many factors that contribute to the rampant gun violence in the United States.

Contact your Representative and Senator today to insist that our country needs sensible solutions to gun violence and gun violence prevention.

REAL TALK
Presents
NEO School Board Races:
The Priorities, Issues, and Controversy

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 -- 7 pm ET

Hosted By REAL TALK
In Partnership With the Ohio School Board Association,
Honesty For Ohio Education, and Ideastream Public Media

Across the state, school board races and school board meetings are growing in intensity and debate. In Northeast Ohio, many are especially contentious with issues around COVID-19 protocols, transparent curriculum development, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives driving heated disputes and personal attacks. While some school board candidates are campaigning on these issues, the disputes themselves are impacting district operations, student learning, and personal safety.

Join our education panel to learn about the roles of local school boards and the duties and responsibilities of school board members. Jenny Hamel, education reporter for Ideastream Public Media, will moderate a round table discussion with area school board members sharing the effect these contentious issues are having on their school board races, board operations, and community relations.

REAL TALK is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion program that examines the pulleys and levers in Northeast Ohio that perpetuate systemic and institutional racism, discrimination, cycles of poverty, disparities in education, social determinants of health, criminal injustice, environmental injustice, and employment and housing insecurity.

The program assembles the experts, practitioners, and community members who create and drive meaningful, sustainable change -- and provides the information and resources for Ohioans to TAKE ACTION.

REAL TALK is a collaboration amongst four Leagues of Women Voters in Northeast Ohio (Akron Area, Greater Cleveland, Hudson, Kent), in strong partnership with the Akron NAACP, The Freedom BLOC, ideastream, and WKSU.
