Paolo DeMaria (Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ohio Department of Education)

Colleagues know Paolo DeMaria as a passionate leader, a tireless worker, a respectful listener and an energetic advocate for Ohio’s 1.7 million students. All are qualities he has called on daily during his tenure as Ohio’s superintendent of public instruction. His proudest accomplishment is the Ohio Department of Education’s partnership with stakeholders to develop Each Child, Our Future, Ohio’s strategic plan for education. He devotes his energy to realizing Ohio’s vision that each child is challenged to discover and learn, prepared to pursue a fulfilling post-high school path and empowered to become a resilient, lifelong learner who contributes to society. Mr. DeMaria believes that everyone shares the responsibility of preparing children for successful futures. With educators, partners, community organizations and parents working together, Ohio’s 3,600 schools and thousands of teachers can create bright futures for our students and state.

John Richard (Deputy Superintendent, Ohio Department of Education)

Mr. Richard believes every Ohio school and district should have outstanding leaders. Fueling that conviction are more than 10 years of experience as a part-time instructor in the University of Akron’s school principalship program and 30 years of field experience ranging from classroom teacher to district superintendent. As a district leader, he saw steady gains in student performance from 2005-2013.

As deputy superintendent of Ohio schools, Richard works closely with the four primary program centers of the Ohio Department of Education. The centers oversee all initiatives related to student supports, continuous improvement, performance and impact, and teaching, leading and learning. Richard continues to focus on leadership development by overseeing ongoing professional development sessions for the Department’s senior leaders. Richard speaks frequently to Ohio education groups about the critical impact of excellent educational leadership both on students’ lives and Ohio’s future.

Take Action!

National PTA and its members have long advocated to ensure schools have the proper resources needed to help children learn, grow and succeed to reach their full potential. Yet, historically, unlike roads and bridges, school facilities have received virtually no federal investment. However, every school day, nearly 50 million K-12 students and 6 million adults occupy close to 100,000 public school buildings in the United States. In more than 30% of public-school facilities, windows, plumbing and HVAC systems are considered in “fair” or “poor” condition. Given state budget shortfalls and the need for economic recovery, now is the time for the federal government to invest in school infrastructure. The long-term success of our nation depends on quality federal investments in our education system.

Contact your Representative and Senators today to insist that schools be included in infrastructure funding!

Virtual Parent Town Hall with the U.S. Department of Education

Virtual Parent Town Hall with the U.S. Department of Education

Thursday, July 29, 8:00 - 9:00 pm ET

After a year and a half of grappling with the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, students across the country are slated to return to school in-person this fall. However, for many, especially parents, the return to in-person instruction has brought with it a variety of worries, hesitations, and questions:

  • Will my child(ren) be safe at school?
  • What COVID precautions should I look for in my child’s school?
  • How will schools take my child's social and emotional well-being into account?
  • Is the vaccine safe?
  • Should I get the vaccine?
  • Should my child(ren) get the vaccine?

While one of Biden Administration’s top priorities is to have all students back in-person this fall, they recognize that this goal will not be met if parents’ voices are not heard, and their concerns taken into account. This Parent Town Hall is a unique opportunity for parents to share their ideas and concerns, and to get their questions answered.

During the event, panelists from the US Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will answer parents’ questions and address concerns around the return to in-person instruction.

Parents are invited to submit questions about the return to in-person instruction on the registration form. Pre-submitted questions will help plan the content of the session. Time will also be reserved for live questions and answers at the end of the event.

Spanish interpretation and close captions will be available.

Any areas in which discretion is permissible or areas in which schools choose to deviate from these recommendations should be thoroughly discussed and communicated with local health department leaders, school administration, staff, and parent groups."

Transgender Ohioans can now change their gender on birth certificates
Thanks to a December 2020 court ruling, Ohioans can now change their birth certificates so that their gender is accurately identified. With the change, transgender Ohioans can ensure that all their paperwork and vital documents match. The change also furthers equality and anti-discrimination for trans Ohioans. According to usbirthcertificates.com, "The 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey found that the resulting discrepancy between names and gender markers on official ID documents and the perceived gender identities of their holders caused one-third of survey respondents to suffer harassment, discrimination, assault and/or see benefits and services denied."

The process to change the gender listed on one’s birth certificate takes place in county probate court and may vary throughout the state. ACLU of Ohio has released this fact sheet to provide clarity about the process.
