Honesty for Ohio Education

HB 99 Signed into Law

We are deeply saddened to report that on Monday, Governor Dewine signed House Bill 99 into law, allowing school personnel to carry and discharge guns in school buildings with minimal training. The bill caps mandatory gun training for school personnel at 24 hours, 22 of those hours are online, only 2 hours with a weapon.

The State Board of Education may hire the next state superintendent WITHOUT a new search process!

On June 13-14 the State Board of Education will meet and consider a resolution to instate Larry Hook as the new state superintendent and completely bypass a NEW, transparent search process. Larry Hook was a candidate from the Board's previous shortlist of finalists.

This concerning resolution comes after Stephen Dackin's sudden resignation as superintendent amid growing scrutiny over his role in leading the hiring process as the Board vice president, before applying for the position himself.

Approval of this resolution removes Ohioans from this important search process and makes the controversial process even worse. Ohioans deserve an honest, transparent hiring process that allows us to review candidates, submit feedback, and inform the decision-making.

UPDATES
STATEHOUSE

The Ohio legislature is in recess for the summer.

On Monday, Governor Dewine signed House Bill 99 into law, allowing school personnel to carry and discharge guns in school buildings with minimal training. The bill caps mandatory gun training for school personnel at 24 hours, 22 of those hours are online, only 2 hours with a weapon.

“The fact that Governor DeWine signed this bill to let barely trained, armed teachers in our classrooms just weeks after a horrific mass shooting at an elementary school is a slap in the face to gun violence survivors everywhere,” said Sara Salsbury, a volunteer with the Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action.
