OHIO ARTS EDUCATION DATA PROJECT
Ohio is proud to be among the first few states in the nation to provide online arts education data dashboards to the public through the Ohio Arts Education Data Project launched in September 2018. The 2018 Arts Education Data Project Ohio Executive Summary Report provides a top line view of the data analysis. Here is a look at one data point for art education in Ohio:

Snapshot of Arts Education in Ohio Schools
Believe it or not, there are students in Ohio receiving no arts education. Statewide data pulled from the Arts Education Data Project on 'No Arts Schools and Students' showed 116 schools provided no arts courses in the 2016-2017 school year. This impacted 28,258 students (representing 3.4% of schools and 1.7% of all students). The number has improved since 2016, which saw 5.1% of schools and 2.6% of students not provided any art education. The largest concentration of "no arts" students is in elementary schools (52% or 14,573 students). This represents 2% of all elementary students.

Arts Access: Traditional vs. Community Schools
The data shows that access to arts education varies significantly between traditional public and community (charter) schools. Although only 6% of Ohio students were enrolled in charter schools during the 2016-17 school year, they accounted for 40% of the students attending schools that do not offer arts courses.

Did you know? Anyone can access school-level, district, county, and statewide art education data! This unique arts education data system puts 'real time' arts education information in the hands parents, students, educators, and arts education advocates around the state. The interactive, color-coded dashboard displays arts access and enrollment data for Ohio's preK-12 schools as reported annually via the state's Education Management Information System (EMIS).

The Ohio Arts Education Data Project is the result of the partnership between OAAE, the Ohio Arts Council, the Ohio Department of Education, and Quadrant Research. Over the past 15 years, advocates have been working to quantify who has access to arts education and who does not. We know that great inequities exist within states and districts. While having enormous repositories of data, school districts and states need help in parsing the information to show a true picture of access to and participation in arts education.
