Navigating the "Paths to Success" from high school and beyond

Today, Learning Heroes, along with National PTA, Univision, and Remake Learning Days Across America, launches Paths to Success, a research-based bilingual resource aimed at helping parents of middle school and high school students prepare their child for success in high school and beyond - whether that path leads to a four-year college, technical program, or a job.

Focusing on the transition years is important any year, but especially this year. Paths to Success includes a one-pager (print/digital) with 5 tips to help parents prepare their child for high school and beyond and includes numerous partner resources that answer many parent questions surrounding class choices, financial aid, and more.

We invite you to use our new Social Media toolkit to help share Paths to Success with your network. We also hope you can join us on February 25 at 4pm PT/ 7pm ET, for a webinar to provide concrete strategies, insights, and resources that will help educators work with families and students as they transition into high school and explore the multiple pathways to success.

National Survey Finds Majority of Parents Support End-of-Year State Assessments With Modifications and Resources

National Survey Finds Majority of Parents Support End-of-Year

State Assessments With Modifications and Resources

Over 60% of parents report being worried their child is behind and wanting more information

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (Feb. 22, 2021)—National PTA today released the results of a national survey exploring parents’ views on end-of-year state assessments during the COVID-19 pandemic. The poll, which surveyed parents and guardians with children in grades K-12 in public schools, was conducted through Edge Research and in collaboration with Learning Heroes.

Key findings of the survey show:

  • 52% of parents favor end-of-year testing this spring to measure the impact of the pandemic on student learning.

  • 60% of parents are worried their child is behind and want more information on where their child is academically.

  • 62% of parents believe their child to be behind compared to a normal school year.

  • 49% of parents are worried their student will not be prepared for the next grade.

“As underscored by the results of the survey, parents and educators alike should have meaningful data on student learning and progress. This is especially important to help our teachers tailor their instruction to students and address COVID-19 learning gaps; help identify the supports students need from their school, teachers and family; help parents and teachers work together to address learning loss and support students’ success; and help parents better support their children’s learning at home,” said Leslie Boggs, president of National PTA. “Statewide assessments are one of multiple measures—including benchmark tests, classroom-based tests, report card grades and teacher observations—that, when combined, help give a clearer picture of where children are academically and help equip parents to effectively advocate on behalf of their child’s learning.”

While the majority of parents favor administering end-of-year state assessments this year, there are some modifications parents would like to see this year to address the unusual circumstances. The majority of parents surveyed favor lowering the stakes for this year’s end-of-year state tests, with 69% of parents indicating they believe the results should not affect student grades nor promotion to the next grade level; 56% of parents indicating they believe the results should not be used to grade schools; and 51% of parents reporting they believe the results should not be used to evaluate teachers. The majority of parents surveyed (76%) also believe it is extremely or very important to include resources with the test results that they can use at home with their child to review concepts where their child may have struggled.

“Today’s release underscores parents' continued reliance upon statewide assessments to know how well their child is meeting grade level expectations. 60% of all parents support giving the state assessment this spring with lowered stakes to measure student learning. Learning Heroes research consistently shows that parents use statewide assessments as one of several measures they can use to get a more complete picture of their child's learning," said Cindi Williams, co-founder of Learning Heroes.

Additional findings of the survey reveal that 67% of parents feel they are more connected to their child’s day-to-day education than ever before. However, 43% of parents report feeling less confident than in previous years that they understand how well their child is doing academically. These findings are consistent with findings of surveys Learning Heroes has conducted over the past five years on parent mindsets. According to Learning Heroes’ surveys, 90% of parents believe their child to be at or above grade level. Only 38% of students are meeting grade level expectations, however, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

“So many students were already behind before the pandemic, and the pandemic has exacerbated educational inequities. Meaningful and timely data sharing is critical to student success. Data is a universal language that cuts across all cultures and communities,” added Nathan R. Monell, CAE, National PTA executive director. “We must ensure parents, teachers and school leaders have the best, most accurate information to support the profession of teaching and our children’s learning if we honestly want to address learning gaps, improve outcomes for our children and ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

National PTA remains firm in its belief that good assessments play a vital role in measuring student progress so parents and educators have the best information to support teaching and learning, address learning gaps, improve outcomes and ensure equity for all children. The association also advocates for assessment data to be clear, shared in culturally competent ways and provided alongside actionable solutions about how to address deficiencies and support learning in meaningful ways.

Timeline for Releasing Redistricting Data

Timeline for Releasing Redistricting Data

By James Whitehorne, Chief, Redistricting and Voting Rights Data Office

If this were a typical decade, we would be on the verge of delivering the first round of redistricting data from the 2020 Census. Our original plan was to deliver the data in state groupings starting Feb. 18, 2021 and finishing by March 31, 2021.

However, COVID-19 delayed census operations significantly. Consistent with previous census, we are focusing first on our constitutional obligation to deliver the state population counts for apportionment to the President. As we announced last week, the deadline for this work is April 30, 2021. This focus on meeting our constitutional obligation has delayed some of the processing activities necessary to generate the redistricting counts.   We expect to deliver the redistricting data to the states and the public by Sept. 30, 2021.

Now that we have finalized the schedule for completing the apportionment counts (by April 30), we have been able to finalize a schedule for the redistricting data. Continue Reading...

Census Bureau Statement on Redistricting Data Timeline

The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that it will deliver the Public Law 94-171 redistricting data to all states by Sept. 30, 2021. COVID-19-related delays and prioritizing the delivery of the apportionment results delayed the Census Bureau’s original plan to deliver the redistricting data to the states by March 31, 2021.

Different from previous censuses, the Census Bureau will deliver the data for all states at once, instead of on a flow basis. This change has been made because of COVID-19-related shifts in data collection and in the data processing schedule and it enables the Census Bureau to deliver complete and accurate redistricting data in a more timely fashion overall for the states. Continue Reading...

BUILD FAMILY ENGAGEMENT DURING TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO SCHOOL WEEK

BUILD FAMILY ENGAGEMENT DURING TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO SCHOOL WEEK

For over 120 years, National PTA has been encouraging families to get more involved in their child’s education. National PTA’s Take Your Family to School Week is designed to provide families with an opportunity to get more involved in their child’s education and strengthen their partnerships with teachers and administrators. The timing of the week honors the day PTA was founded, Feb. 17, 1897.

Research shows that family engagement supports student success. Students with involved parents are more likely to earn higher grades and pass their classes, attend school regularly, have better social skills and go on to post secondary education.

Help us celebrate PTA’s long legacy of family engagement during National PTA's Take Your Family to School Week—Feb. 14-21, 2021 by hosting a National PTA program with your school community! In response to our changing world, PTA Programs will be accessible through a variety of models: In Real-Time, At Your Own Pace and Tech-Free. These programs will offer engaging, educational and fun activities for all students and their families—with or without access to technology or grant funding.

You have the freedom to design whatever type of program works for you and your school community- whether at school, at home or online. Check out the resources at https://www.pta.org/home/events/PTA-Take-Your-Family-to-School-Week to better plan and promote your program.
