Diversity in Math Movie Series

Teachers and students are invited to take advantage of a monthly opportunity to virtually join the Department of Mathematics at The Ohio State University as they enjoy a film depicting the lives of prominent mathematicians from underrepresented groups and learn about their passions and struggles. Watch the film ahead of time and connect for a panel discussion to talk about the math and the people and how this relates to you in the current times.

In March, the featured film is Navajo Math Circles, which documents the meeting of two worlds: that of some of the country’s most accomplished mathematicians and math educators, with the children and teachers in the underserved, largely rural Navajo educational system.

This event is open to anyone ages 10 and above.

WHEN: March 17, 7 p.m.

Beyond the Classroom Monthly

The Department of Mathematics at The Ohio State University, through its outreach branch Buckeye Aha! Math Moments (BAMM), hosts free, virtual, monthly workshops for students in grades 6-12. Student attendees get to explore math through engaging activities in a nontraditional environment.

In March, join BAMM to learn about Shongo networks. Kids in Congo play a game of drawing this traditional shapes in the sand without lifting the stick. The same designs often appear in woven handcrafts. In this workshop students will study which patterns can be successfully drawn for the game and which can't.

WHEN: March 20, 11 a.m.
