PUBLIC COMMENT ON ADDENDUM REQUEST FOR ONE-YEAR ACCOUNTABILITY FLEXIBILITIES

The Department’s memo outlines the details of each section and the official draft request are now available for review on the Department’s Every Student Succeeds Act website

The U.S. Department of Education issued guidance in October 2020 specifying that states can submit an addendum to their ESSA plans for one-year flexibilities related to states’ Every Student Succeeds Act state plans. This addendum process allows states to address specific issues arising from missing data from the 2019-2020 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ordered school building closures, and the cancelation of the spring 2020 assessments.

This process is not a ‘blanket waiver’ from federal accountability and report card requirements. However, the intent of Ohio’s proposal is to limit the consequences of any data generated during this school year to the extent allowable and make allowable technical adjustments to relevant aspects of the report card.

The Department would like to hear from interested stakeholders about the proposed usage of the one-year flexibilities for the Every Student Succeeds Act state plan. Please provide feedback by Wednesday, January 27, 2021. Please email all input to eseawaiver@education.ohio.gov.

National PTA Applauds President Biden’s Immigration Reform Bill

National PTA Applauds President Biden’s Immigration Reform Bill

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (Jan. 21, 2021)—The following statement can be attributed to National PTA President Leslie Boggs:

“National PTA applauds the bill President Joe Biden introduced to Congress last evening that would protect and strengthen the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, create a path to citizenship for DACA recipients and other undocumented immigrants living in the United States, and keep immigrant families together.

“National PTA has consistently advocated in support of the DACA program and for comprehensive immigration reform. Our association has also raised its voice for children and their parents and family members who have been separated at the border.

National PTA has long believed that every child residing in the United States—regardless of their immigration status—has the right of access to a high-quality public education, adequate food and shelter, and basic health care services and to be treated with dignity and respect. Keeping families together and ensuring that all children, including immigrant children, have the opportunity to reach their full potential and become productive members of society is essential and in the best interest of our nation.

“The United States began as a country of immigrants and the resulting blend of cultures has enriched our nation for over two hundred years. We applaud President Biden for recognizing, valuing and embracing the diversity of our nation.

“National PTA urges Congress to take action on the bill and address immigration in a bipartisan, comprehensive way. Our association remains committed to raising our voice for DACA recipients and other undocumented immigrants and families in our country. Our nation’s future will benefit from their continued contributions.”

There's No How-To Guide For Parenting

LA Johnson/NPR

As if navigating the coronavirus pandemic with kids wasn’t enough, the events of the past few weeks have put many of us over the edge. If you’re a parent overwhelmed by it all, we’re right there with you -- and here to help.

You probably know NPR education correspondents Cory Turner and Anya Kamenetz for their education reporting. What you might not know is that they’re also frequent hosts of NPR’s Life Kit podcast. We all need a little advice sometimes, and that’s where Life Kit comes in. This show has episodes with timely tips on everything from finances to your health.

Lots of those tips are about raising kids -- and they speak to this particular moment in parenting. There are episodes about how to talk to little ones about scary news and how to help them cope with anxiety during the pandemic. If you’ve been struggling to talk to your kids about death, this episode might help. Cory and Anya have also helped parents navigate screen time (a challenge when both school and playdates are remote) and how to talk to kids about civics. (We’ll be re-listening to that one this week, before the presidential inauguration.)

And since you’re probably not getting much alone time these days, we also have  Life Kit episodes you can listen to with your kids: In this one, Grover from Sesame Street gives little ones advice for getting through the pandemic.

There’s no guidebook to being a parent -- especially during a pandemic. But sometimes, hearing how others are navigating it all can help. You can subscribe to get Life Kit’s parenting episodes on AppleSpotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. And while you’re there, check out Life Kit’s other episodes. We bet you’ll find something you like.

National PTA Statement on Riots at the U.S. Capitol

National PTA Statement on Riots at the U.S. Capitol

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (Jan. 8, 2020)—The following statement can be attributed to National PTA President Leslie Boggs:

“National PTA condemns the storming of our nation’s capital. Like so many Americans, we were outraged by the violence, destruction and attack on our democracy. Wednesday was another hard day for our nation, and one that we should never have experienced.

“Every parent, grandparent, family member, community leader, business leader and educational leader knows it is how we choose to react to situations that makes the difference. Out of every challenge is an opportunity to do things better, think differently and embrace resources we never utilized before.

“National PTA is choosing to react with hope. We are choosing to honor our association’s values of collaboration, commitment, diversity, respect and accountability. We are choosing to continue to believe in the supreme importance of our children and in our mission to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.

“This is an important time for all of us to sit down together with our children and talk with them about how democracy and government works in our country, the importance of practicing civility, and the importance of using our powerful voices for good.

“National PTA offers tips to help families and educators have conversations with their children about incidents such as the riots at the U.S. Capitol and ways to use such situations to reinforce family and community values and beliefs. The tips can be accessed at PTA.org.

“PTA has a rich legacy in coming together to help solve the toughest problems facing our children, families and communities. It is imperative that we choose to be united and supportive during this difficult time in our country. As PTA members, we must continue to help lead the way with our powerful, collective voice to protect the voice of our future—our children. Together, we can move above and beyond the division of our country and build a shared experience—the experience of working together as human beings, intent on building a better nation and world.”
