Parents and Caregivers Needed for Ohio’s Family Engagement Advisory Council

Parents and Caregivers Needed for Ohio’s Family Engagement Advisory Council

Do you want to have a voice in shaping Ohio’s new Statewide Family Engagement Center? The Ohio State University is forming a Family Engagement Advisory Council to share diverse perspectives on the resources to be developed by the Center. The Council will be made up of a group of about 20 family representatives, along with high school students, school administrators, teachers, other education professionals/leaders in Ohio, and representatives from businesses. They are seeking a diverse group of parents, guardians, and caretakers of children from birth to Grade 12 throughout Ohio. Applications are due by December 1, 2018.

Expectations of Council members: (1) Attend meetings in Columbus, Ohio four times between January and October of 2019, from 10 am until 2 pm. The first meeting will be on February 8th, 2019. Lunch and parking will be provided. (2) Participate in Council discussions and activities for at least one calendar year. Parent, guardian, and caretaker members will receive a stipend of $60 per meeting, and will be reimbursed for mileage to and from meetings.

To apply, click on this link to the Ohio State Family Engagement website. Language interpreters and other supports will be available at Council meetings upon request, and translated versions of this application in Spanish, Arabic, Somali, and Chinese (simplified) will also be available upon request.

President's Message

PTA Leaders,

Great news- the PTA Connected grant deadline has been extended to November 18! This is a marvelous opportunity to win $1000 for your PTA to host an event on online safety and digital communications for students and families. National PTA will award 400 grants. The grants fund a turnkey program (all the materials and instructions needed are supplied) that makes it easy for your PTA to offer an evening of family learning. Interested? Click here to apply.

And while we are talking about being PTA Connected, I hope you are encouraging your officers and members go to pta.org and ohiopta.org and connect for resources, new programs and grant applications. They can also sign up at ohiopta.org/Resources to receive The Voice and emails. Checking in with Ohio PTA Facebook and the National and Ohio PTA websites ensures that you never miss an opportunity to apply for a grant or learn about a new program. That’s one of the great benefits of PTA- being part of a network that offers online training and resources, member forums such as the Ohio PTA H.U.B. on Facebook plus the personal service your District Advisor offers.

I hope your PTA has had a fun and productive fall- running membership campaigns and student events and welcoming all families to school and your meetings. The new Ohio PTA Membership Awards are so creative and give your PTA more chances than ever to be recognized. And now, our new office staff has started a new service- sending you an email confirming the amount of membership dues submitted. So remember, “Membership is Year Round” and membership growth provides more volunteers and future leaders and helps your PTA do more for your school, students and families.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and as always, thanks for being a PTA leader!

Susan

Family Engagement/STEM

Congratulations to the winner of the Ohio PTA Science Festival Grant- Falls Lenox/Early Childhood Center PTA in District 12! Falls Lenox/ECC PTA will be hosting students and families for an evening of science learning. Students and adult family members will be participating in the four STEM stations together. Each station will have a different focus- science, technology, engineering and math. Families will be able to experience 4-6 unique activities at each station.

Falls Lenox/ECC will be extending STEM learning beyond the event by sending families monthly bulletins on new STEM activities that can be done at home. Conducting STEM activities at home fosters student interest in STEM and builds parents’ confidence in their ability to assist and guide their children in learning more about STEM and STEM careers. Falls Lenox/ECC PTA also plans to recruit community members to staff the learning stations in addition to using PTA volunteers. Involving the community demonstrates the value of PTA and can lead to long-term partnerships with businesses and other nonprofit organizations.

For more information on hosting STEM events, go to pta.org/programs/stem. For resources on STEM careers and science activities that can be done at home, go to pta.org/stem/families.
